Boston Massacre Memorial is installed.
1888
Artist: Robert Kraus. Also known as the Crispus Attucks Memorial, it is located on Boston Common. Attendees at the ceremony include Mayor Hugh O’Brien and John Boyle O’Reilly, who recites a poem in praise of Crispus Attucks, in which he calls him, “First to defy, first to die.” But the monument is installed despite opposition from the Massachusetts Historical Society, which had declared, “we should not place the martyr’s crown on the ruffian’s brow.”
